Language (CELPIP · DET)
Immigration points often come down to language scores — and the right test depends entirely on your goal. We start by sorting that out with you.
Check first — the wrong test is a common mistake
- The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an admission test. It is not accepted for the PGWP or for PR/citizenship — those stages require IRCC-designated tests: CELPIP, IELTS GT, or PTE Core.
- PGWP applications on or after November 1, 2024 require proof of language ability. 'I got in with DET, so I'm done' means re-testing at graduation.
- Not every IELTS counts: only General Training works for Express Entry — Academic scores cannot be used.
- Results are valid for 2 years, and must be valid at both profile submission and PR application.
Which test for which goal

| PGWP (applications from Nov 1, 2024) | CELPIP-G · IELTS GT · PTE Core (TEF/TCF for French) | DET not accepted · in-person testing |
| PR (Express Entry) | CELPIP-G · IELTS GT · PTE Core (TEF/TCF for French) | DET not accepted · CEC needs CLB 7 or 5 by TEER |
| Citizenship | Any accepted proof of CLB 4+ | Speaking & listening only · ages 18–54 |

Duolingo DET — the admission door-opener
The DET is an online adaptive English test with lower fees and fast results, accepted for admission by many Canadian colleges and universities. Acceptance and cut scores vary by school, so we confirm your target school's official list before you apply.
A strong DET score can replace conditional admission with direct admission — checking the target school's requirements comes first.
We teach DET with our own workbook and course materials, and set your target score from your target school's requirements.
CELPIP — the immigration-stage test
If Canadian PR is the goal, you will eventually sit CELPIP (or IELTS GT / PTE Core). CELPIP scores map directly to CLB levels and the whole test is computer-delivered — no live examiner.
Prep is taught by our founder (CELPIP 12/12/11/10, IELTS 8.5), working backwards from the per-ability scores your target program requires.
